1970s Shed

In 2018 plot holder Simon Coleman took on a restoration of an old shed located at the south end of Northfield allotments.

This shed was believed to have been built in the early 1970s. An aerial photograph from 1971 clearly shows a shed in the exact same spot on the allotment. This shed had been “patched and repaired” by previous plot holders, adding layers of corrugated plastic and roofing felt on top of the original framework. Below are photos of before work started

The reconstruction started with stripping off the outer layers until the original woodwork was visible. The shed needed to be completely rebuilt with a new frame and roof timbers. As much as possible of the exterior cladding was kept as well, including the front door. Below are photos of the shed stripped down before being rebuilt, note all the materials removed from the shed piled up!

On the walls inside the shed (under various layers of boarding) there was found to be floor lino as well as an orange bitumen wallpaper which has been displayed inside the shed. Shown in photos below.

I kept as many original features as possible and added some new features including a green roof, display of vintage tools from the 1950s & 1960s that have been found on the allotment and reclaimed brick floor.

Website creator: Simon Coleman, I have been a member of Northfields allotments for over 10 years now and love the mysteries that the past holds of the people who came before us at Ealing dean allotments.

I must acknowledge my mentor in our history search Paul McConnell, who is responsible for the research at the London Metropolitan Archives and other places, and writes excellent accurate articles.

I, on the other hand, tend to find treasure like old bottles, enamel signs as well as rebuilding old sheds and love to share this information with anyone who will listen.
